What the end of the semester does to Conner 2

What the end of the semester does to Conner 2 Hello readers. Happy Holidays to everyone! The term is over and Im happy to be getting lots and lots of sleep in my FULL SIZE (!) bed at home. Almost all of my grades are in and Im also happy to report that I did much better this semester than last (*grin*), so thats a nice feeling. All thats left from last semester is a bunch of pictures that Im about to share. I walked out of my room one day to discover a huge mess. Well, it may have taken a while for the mess to present itself (perspective and all that). But it had finally reached the point where it was worth documenting, so I took a bunch of pictures. And now Im able to show you just what finals week did to the 213 suite. First of all, everyone is always eating and never doing dishes, so the sink looks like that. Second of all, peopleapparently dont have big enough desks, so they spread their study materials all over the counters, like so. Also, since our walls are not made of dry-erase boards, they improvise. This is the wall of 5.12 (organic chemistry) study material, I believe. (Im not a chem person, dont ask me.) And we clearly dont have enough counter space But who wants to talk about how crazy everyone was studying for finals? Theyre over! Lets talk about the good stuff. Right between the end of classes and finals week (known as reading period, which is when were given a couple of days off to study, which we really spend shopping and catching up on sleep, which are both valid uses of our newfound free time, in my humble opinion), is the annual Conner 2 non-denominational politically correct winter festivities dinner, which is so named really just for the fun of it, since it comes complete with its very own Secret Santa tradition that no one ever complains is politically incorrect. Go figure. Please enjoy the following pictures of Conner 2 residents (in varying states of formal attire) enjoying the non-denominational festivities: Chris (our GRT) and David. Rick and Zach. A week before this picture was taken, some people were handing stuff out in front of Building 7 (the main entrance to main campus). This isnt really unusual, and it comes with varying degrees of annoyance. Protesters and activists hand out pamphlets and chant slogans, and sometimes I find myself able to forgive them for what I think are ridiculous opinions based on the cleverness of their slogans. Anyway, on this particular day I was handed one sticker, no strings attached (not even a website to visit, the one time I actually wanted more information) by a guy who explained that they were trying to get people to think about and get involved in public issues. The sticker said My government is a                  , which totally cracked me up. I really thought this was hilarious. Rick was also handed one of these, which he saved in case he ever needed it. Well, he scratched out the a, filled in the blank, and gave it to Adelaide as part of her Secret Santa gift. Anyway, all of that is a really long way of getting to the point, which is that Adelaide is wearing a sticker that says My government is Stephen Harper, because Adelaide is our resident Canadian. Ha. Mason is clearly the only one who has any idea Im taking this picture. Rick is wearing a cheese head, because hes from Wisconsin. I guess. I dont know, I just post pictures on the Internet, ok? Apparently Conner 2 is really into making its residents into caricatures based on their home towns/cities/nations. (Diana and are the resident New Jerseyans and often get asked such things as So when you go home for semester breaks, is it really like that movie Garden State?) I was debating if I wanted to get dressed up or not, and finally gave in to the temptation because Javier wanted to know what I actually looked like when I was dressed up. Adelaide took this picture, and I kind of think she should title it Girl with Fork because that would be both accurate and artistic, and how often do those two coincide? Seriously. Conner 2 has an additional tradition related to our Secret Santa exchange- instead of just writing the recipients name on the gift (how boring would that be!) we instead attach a poem about them. The fun starts when one person who is elected to begin the exchange picks a gift at random, reads the poem, and then everyone else figures out who the poem refers to. As you can imagine, these poems can getcreative? Amusing? Inappropriate for reposting on the Internet? All of the above? ;-) As for the poems, limericks are a popular choice, although this year even included a real-life honest-to-goodness sonnet. No joke. We take our Secret Santa seriously here on Conner 2. For example, Ricks gift was actually 5 or 6 separate items, separately wrapped. After the barbecue chips and wooden dowel, we were all really, really confused, until he finally unwrapped the stuffed penguin. Apparently theres some inside joke that I totally missed (which sadly ruined my full enjoyment of this moment of unveiling) about Rick wanting to know if rotisserie penguin are kosher. Dont ask me, I wasnt there, and I mean it when I say I really have no idea. In another example of Secret Santa hardcoreness, my gift was wrapped in duct tape (to which someone joked how are you going to open it??), a reference to my duct tape fashion constructions for the Anything But Clothes Party. (Seriously, once you post pictures of yourself wearing nothing but duct tape on the Internet, you can NEVER GO BACK. Just remember that. Forget everything I ever told you about college apps- thats my biggest piece of advice). My poem even started In case the packaging didnt give it away Thanks to Adelaide for some of the pictures! Thats all what we do or maybe give them a harsh punishment. It seems that the problem has only focused on punishment and very little on prevention or intervention. Electricity Supply Corporation Of Malawi Ltd, (ESCOM) which was established by an Act of Parliament in 1957 and was revised 1963 and 1998 respectively. (Power sector reform strategy 2003:27) In this essay we are going to explain the background of ESCOM, its Mission, challenges and the concept of intervention with reference to the interventions government has made to the corporation and also the strategies which government used for this intervention will be outlined. The Electricity Supply Commission of Malawi (ESCOM) LTD is a public utility which was incorporated under the companies Act of the Republic of Malawi in 1998 with its own articles of Association. It is owned almost wholly by the Government of Malawi (99%), while the remaining shares of 1% are held by Malawi Development Corporation (MDC). Its principal business is to generate, transmit, distribute and retail electricity services nationwide through its interconnected and off-grid power supply systems. The utility handles large portfolio of electricity and civil works, projects of development and maintenance nature to meet electricity demand. Currently the company is undergoing major reforms to align it with the provisions of the energy policy 2003 which calls for the liberalization of the power supply industry. Power Sector Reform Strategy 2003:4) MISSION STATEMENT OF THE CORPORATION The mission statement of the utility company is to generate, transmit and distribute electrical energy and provide related services, motivated by desire for excellence through the use of appropriate technologies, to satisfaction of customers and other stakeholders. It’s divided into four distinct business units namely: Generation, Transmission, Distribution and Holding. Power Sector Reform Strategy 2003:4) ESCOM is faced with big challenge of meeting the ever growing demand for electric power. This challenge has seen ESCOM put in extra efforts to meet the growing demand starting from generation, transmission and all the way to distribution. These challenges have put ESCOM at a cross-road for deciding to move forward while moving from the comfort zone of having surplus electricity in the past years to a strained period. The major challenge is building new capacity to satisfy the higher demand for electricity that accompanies strong national economic growth. The corporation has three hydro-electrical plants: Nkula A and B, Tedzani A and B, Kapichira and Wovwe. (ESCOM annual Report 1999) Access to electricity in Malawi is very low and demand is highly skewed in favour of industrial and large commercial customers who use nearly 60% of the total and this is according to the power sector reform strategy paper (2003) Domestic users’ account for 25%, and the remaining 15% goes to small commercial consumers. ESCOM’s records show very low coverage by SADC standards whose regional average access rate is 20%. The vertically integrated publicly owned Electricity Supply Industry Structure has proven to be neither effective nor efficient to this end, hence government of Malawi, has formulated the Power Sector Reform Strategy (PSRS) outlining priority action to implement reforms. The execution of the Electricity Supply Industry reforms is governed by an implementation schedule, which forms an integral part of this power sector reform strategy. The goals for the reforms are to increase the role of electricity in the national energy mix from the present low coverage to highest coverage by 2050. (ESCOM annual Report 1999) The elements of Electricity Supply Industry Reform programmed planned by government are as follows. To expand and revitalize the Electricity Supply Industry and provide an adequate, affordable and reliable power supply which will assist in industrialization, rural transformation, sustainable economic development and reducing poverty and to enable the Electricity Supply Industry effectively participate in the emerging regional electricity trading markets through the Southern African Paver Pool (SAPP) so to realize these goals Government of Malawi set the following objectives for Electricity Supply Industry reforms; Increase technical and economic efficiency, to improve the reliability and quality of electricity supply to eet the growing demand for electricity supply. To meet the growing demand for electricity at least cost is also one of the objectives. The other objective is to make electricity accessible to a large proportion of population. To increase capacity to meet growing demand to attract private capital and participation; to take advantage of power trading opportunities und er Southern African Paver Pool (SAPP) to promote use of solar and other renewable energy sources and protect the environment. Power Sector Reform Strategy 2003:4) The Government of Malawi formulated an Energy policy in the year 2003, which was meant to guide the development of the energy sector, including the Electricity Supply Industry. The Energy policy is guided by six objectives which are: improving efficiency and effectiveness of the commercial energy supply Industries, improve the security and reliability of energy supply systems, increase access to affordable and modern energy services, stimulate economic development and rural transformation for poverty reduction, improve energy sector governance and mitigate environmental safety and health impacts of energy production and utilization. The guidelines were aimed at increasing electricity access to the Malawians population. (Source energy Department of Energy Affairs 2003) The Electricity Supply Industry Reform Strategy expresses government of Malawi’s unambiguous support for private sector participation in the electricity supply industry. It provides clear guidelines to all existing and future participants, whether private or state, to have confidence in the electricity supply industry and that it will strengthen the prospects for achieving the fundamental objectives of increasing efficiency, ensuring that the sector is financially viable and thus increasing substantially the number of consumers receiving commercial supplies of electricity. Power Sector Reform Strategy 2003:8) According to a recent study on Energy law in Malawi by Kainja (2000), the evolution of the Electricity Supply Industry reforms in the country, can historically be divided into five phases, and these are: the pre-1948 phase which had a characteristic feature of the Electricity Supply Industry activities of the non-existence of a commercial electricity market. And the second phase of 1948-1958 which had a number of diesel gen-sets which grew to support the growing settler population of the British Government which ruled the country at that time, and institutional structures were put to turn electricity into a commercial commodity. Then the third phase of 1958 to 1998 came, which saw the Electricity Act into force in 1958, governing the instrument for the sector. The main features of this act were the establishment of a stationary corporation. The fourth phase was in 1998-2000 which saw the liberalization of Electricity Supply Industry which began with the corporation of ESCOM. The fifth phase is the 2000 to present, which analyzed or assessed the electricity Act, 1998 and it revealed a number of flaws in the Electricity Act 198 which were contributing to the Government of Malawi’s failure to realize its reform objectives of attracting private investments and reaping, economic and technical efficiency gains promised by the reform, so the shortcomings like weak institutional frameworks, lack of clarity in legal provision or reform strategy and retention of ESCOM as a virtue hence the development of the energy policy (2003) expressing its unambiguous support for greater private sector involvement, and it seeks to provide all necessary policy guidelines to enhance private sector confidence in the new market structures. (Power Sector Reform Strategy 2003:4) The Electricity Supply Industry Reform Strategy Plan is a three year period programme comprising a number of inter-related actions which must be carefully introduced in as series. This power sector re form strategy is a landmark (Department of Energy Affairs 2003) document in the on-going government efforts to expand and revitalize the Electricity Supply industry and make it efficient, effective and more responsive to private sector participation. Although we can say that the reforms are yet to trigger expected results of promoting private sector participation and a gender competition. We still see ESCOM as the sole provider of Electricity in Malawi with no competition resulting in daily blackouts which is not health to an ordinary Malawian who does not own a generator and even for those who own one with the scarcity of diesel we are yet to see the quality of service demanded by consumers. But well it is the sincere hope of Government that the Power Sector Reform Strategy practically implementable to make electricity more accessible to the people of Malawi. (Thomson Harry (2003:i) foreword by the then minister of Natural Resources and Environmental Affairs Lilongwe Malawi is endowed with a relatively large natural resource base for power generation in the form of biomass, coal, perennial rivers, high all year round solar radiation, and geothermal. However, due to capital, technological and human resource constraints a significant proportion of this resource still remains untapped. For example, Malawi’s hydro potential on the Shire River alone is estimated in the range of 300 to 385 MW, even the other rivers have potential too in the range of 445 to 985MW and of all these only 285MW have been developed. So we recommend those investors to come and tap the untapped resources for the better Malawi. (Power Sector Reform Strategy 2003:4) To sum up we can say that the Malawi government used the introduction of reforms in order to intervene in the Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (ESCOM) which of course we can say as of today that nothing good has come out of these reforms since there are more blackouts and ESCOM has no strong competitor as the Malawi community is still being inconvenienced with these blackouts. As I Lay Dying William Faulkner's As I Lay Dying is a novel about howthe conflicting agendas within a family tear it apart. Every member of the family is to a degree responsible for what goes wrong, but none more than Anse. Anse's laziness and selfishness are the underlying factors to every disaster in the book. As the critic Andre Bleikasten agrees, "there is scarcely a character in Faulkner so loaded with faults and vices" (84). At twenty-two Anse becomes sick from working in the sun after which he refuses to work claiming he will die if he ever breaks a sweat again. Anse becomes lazy, and turns Addie into a baby factory in order to have children to do all the work. Addie is inbittered by this, and is never the same. Anse is begrudging of everything. Even the cost of a doctor for his dying wife seems money better spent on false teeth to him. "I never sent for you" Anse says "I take you to witness I never sent for you" (37) he repeats trying to avoid a doctor's fee. Before she dies Addie requests to be buried in Jefferson. When she does, Anse appears obsessed with burying her there. Even after Addie had been dead over a week, and all of the bridges to Jefferson are washed out, he is still determined to get to Jefferson. Is Anse sincere in wanting to fulfill his promise to Addie, or is he driven by another motive? Anse plays "to perfection the role of the grief-stricken widower" (Bleikasten 84) while secretly thinking only of getting another wife and false teeth in Jefferson. When it becomes necessary to drive the wagon across the river, he proves himself to be undeniably lazy as he makes Cash, Jewel, and Darl drive the wagon across while he walks over the bridge, a spectator. Anse is also stubborn; he could have borrowed a team of mules from Mr. Armstid, but he insists that Addie would not have wanted it that way. In truth though Anse uses this to justify trading Jewel's horse for the mules to spare himself the expense. Numerous times in the book he justifies his actions by an interpretation of Addie's will. Anse not only trades Jewel's horse without asking, but he also steals Cash's money. Later on he lies to his family saying that he spent his savings and Cash's money in the trade. "I thought him and Anse never traded," Armstid said. "Sho," they did "All they liked was the horse" Eustace a farmhand of Mr. Snopes said. Anse steels Cash's money and towards the end of the book he also takes ten dollars from Dewey Dell. The ending of the book is best explained by the words of Irving Howe. "When they reach town, the putrescent corpse is buried, the daughter fails in her effort to get an abortion, one son is badly injured, another has gone mad, and at the very end, in a stroke of harsh comedy, the father suddenly remarries" (138). With money he has begrudged, stolen, and talked his way out of paying, he finally buys some new teeth and a new wife for the price of a graphophone. What defies explanation is why Anse is so cold-hearted and indifferent to his children? What has changed him from the hard working twenty-two year old man he once was. In conclusion, by thinking only of himself Anse destroys his family. He is selfish whenever his need's conflict with those of his family. His motives for cheating and lying range from the greed of money to self pity. Instead of what can I do for them Anse will always be the one thinking what can they do for me. Strategies for Support in Child Learning and Development Effective support for children’s learning and development requires early practitioners to have an understanding that children develop quickly during their early years- physically, intellectually, emotionally and socially. Children have an entitlement to be provided with provision that will support them and extend their knowledge, skills, understanding and confidence that will help them overcome any disadvantage. A child in their early year’s experiences should build upon what they already know and can do. The experience should encourage a positive attitude with learning and aims in order to prevent early failure. A child’s learning environment needs to be stimulating and well planned and provide a structure for teaching within which children are able to explore experiment, plan and be able to make decisions for them, therefore enabling them to learn, develop and progress. ‘Children actively seek stimulation and need first hand experiences with real objects and occurrences and responsive adults or children who both support and model’ Bruce, 2001 The Early Years Foundation Stage statutory framework identifies three prime areas of learning: personal, social and emotional development; communication and language; and physical development. Children must also be helped to understand the importance of physical activity, and to make healthy choices in relation to food. Good. A practitioner’s role of encouraging their language acquisition is very important and that it should also concern parents, carers and even policymakers. They need to have knowledge about how the children in early years acquire their language and be able to develop into competent thinkers and language users which reflects good practice. The EYFS has pointed out the vitality of early year’s practitioners providing opportunities where children can communicate thoughts, ideas and feelings with those around them. Children retain language through daily interaction in their immediate environment. They respond to sounds, sentences and experiences expressed by those around them. Listening and attention, understanding and speaking are the three aspects of communication and language development. Communication and language development, from birth children are tuning in to the world around them. Without verbal language by observing babies attentively we are able to see how they are able to communicate with those around them. They hear sounds and will try and establish where the sounds come from. As they get older they will learn to identify and know the difference between various voices and start to understand the meaning of words. Babies cry to attract attention –in this way they communicate with the adults around them to get what they need. They have different cries for different purposes and parents soon get to know which cry means ‘I’m hungry’, ‘I’m in pain’, ‘I’m damp’ or, ‘Come and play with me now!’ Adults respond by meeting these needs and by talking to their baby. Language is important because it forms the foundations for interacting with other people – for communicating our needs, our thoughts and our experiences. From the moment of birth, babies are ready to communicate: they listen to and look at people and things in their environment, and respond to what they hear and see. Babies need a stimulating environment in which those who care for them respond sensitively to the different meanings of their cries, coos and gestures. Having the early ability to communicate verbally and non-verbally is the basis on which language is developed. A child’s ability to develop language depends on being immersed in a rich environment of words, sounds, rhythm, and verbal and non-verbal expression from birth. Children will progress through all language stages as they age, but may have different rates and milestones of achievement according to their own personal development. Early years practitioners play an active role in both language and literacy development. They will help introduce children to words, sounds, letters, and books and will highlight the relationships among them. They can promote literacy in early years by simply reading stories aloud to children on a frequent basis in setting is one of the most effective ways to promote early literacy development among young children. However, young children will tend to focus on the pictures during shared reading. The practitioner should draw children’s attention to print by pointing to the words when they say them or by asking questions about the words in the book for example â€Å"Where is the title?† or â€Å"We know this letter – it’s a C . this can help improve word awareness and alphabet knowledge. By helping children focus on the words and letter this makes shared reading more successful. For young children it would be recommended to use ‘big story booksâ€℠¢ so that all children can see it with its larger print. Mathematics: Children’s earliest interactions are with mathematics as they are exploring patterns, shapes and spaces of the world around them. It will provide children with opportunities to develop and improve their skills in counting, understanding and using numbers, calculating simple addition and subtraction problems. We are, all of us, at all ages, already highly skilled mathematicians. We just haven’t often learned it in our mathematics lessons. Lewis, 1996 Mathematics is an important part of everyday life. We use numbers for counting, ordering and measurements: Learning math in the early years involves more than practitioners providing children with manipulatives, such as pattern blocks or peg boards to explore, because mathematics is about thinking,. In order for children to mathematize what they are doing From ages 3 through 6 children move from an intuitive to a more organized/formal mathematical thinking. children need many experiences that call on them to relate their knowledge to the vocabulary and conceptual framework of mathematics — in other words to mathematize what they intuitively grasp (Joint position statement of NAEYC and NCTM, 2002).Practitioners need to provide the appropriate vocabulary and further their thinking â€Å"what will happen if you cut the smaller pieces in half? Which one comes first, second, third? Why Which one is the longest, shortest, and heaviest? How can you tell? by asking mathematical aimed questions, in turn encourages the child think mathematical. They need to help children have confidence in their calculations, estimations and develop a keen sense of curiosity. From birth babies will work hard at making sense of the world around them. They learn about quantity for example a baby eagerly wanting an object; they will want one for both hands. Then they will realise they can’t hold anymore Understanding the world will involve guiding children to make sense of their physical world and their community through opportunities to explore, observe and find out about people, places, technology and the environment. They are developing the necessary knowledge; skills and understanding that help them make sense of the world around them. This will then provide a foundation for later educational learning of science, design and technology, history, I.C.T and geography. Finding out about the world around them is what babies and young children do very effectively when they investigate by touching, holding or pressing things and by climbing on and jumping off things. These are a few of many other tools and techniques to encourage expressive arts and design in early years. It can benefit young children as hey can help develop intrinsic human qualities, such as creativity, expression, identity, culture and imagination it can impact positively on confidence, self-esteem, perso nal, social, emotional development and behavioral health, breaking down language barriers, cultural prejudices or societal differences, and leading to decreased social problems, reduced inequality and increased creativity. The ways in which a child engages with other people and the environment – playing and exploring, active learning and creating and thinking critically – underpin learning and development across all areas of learning and support the child to remain an effective and motivated learner. Practitioners need to when planning they need to plan to cover all seven areas of learning and development. Each child will develop at their own rate through each developmental milestone. They need to keep a balance of child initiated and adult led play it their planned activities. The Signalman by Charles Dickens Essay -- Charles Dickens Signalman Es

Throughout the short story of The Signalman, this quote was used several times and was repeated by several characters. Coincidence? Charles Dickens invites you to decide. Throughout this period, we have developed our skills of assessing characters (characterisation), identifying language style and structure plus various others, and I will try to use my newly developed skills to answer our assigned question. Ultimately, we came round to The Signalman. The Signalman is a grim but well sustained story about an alleged encounter with something not of the natural world. This dissertation from www.coursework.info Throughout his story, Charles Dickens uses a variety of methods to create an atmosphere of tension, mystery and suspense. Suspense is created through supernatural horror and ambiguity. I will explore these qualities, which make this a good suspense story. The methods of creating tension include leaving characters anonymous, using similar gesticulation and supposed 'coincidences,' plus many others. To me this shows that an unexpected twist makes a good short story. It is evident that Dickens creates a lot of suspense throughout the story with the opening words and as he descends the cutting, looking at the signalman whose actions are very strange, plunging you immediately into the setting. Suspense is created as the signalman tells the gentleman of the strange happenings recently. Mystery surrounds the settings, which are even prone to something like this happening; the mystery also surrounds the two main characters, the Signalman and the narrator. They remain anonymous throughout so the mystery stays with them constantly. Caferoma is a well known brand of coffee, promoted as an exclusive product with a strong and slightly bitter taste. The main problem is Caferoma's market share has declined by almost 30%. I can propose the following solution: Create a new coffee with a new taste and a new name for example „Cafferissimaâ€Å". To introduce the new coffee it will be good to have a limited edition (maybe coffee with taste of chilli). It is necessary to create a new package with an exclusive design for example in gold. Furthermore we give special introduction prices for both coffees.Most people want to try out new brands just to know how it tastes – this is our advantage. In order to bring the old brand back to life, will be a good idea to give small additional samples on the new coffee package of „Cafferissimaâ€Å". Moreover we need a new design of the logo, as the old on e is boring. There is no relation between this logo and the exclusive taste of the coffee. Maybe it could be similar to the package of Caferoma (golden, italic type). The next step will be a change of advertising. A Response to the Great Depression The Great Depression of the 1930s was the economic event of the 20th century. The Great Depression began in 1929 when the entire world suffered an enormous drop in output and an unprecedented rise in unemployment. World economic output continued to decline until 1932 when it clinked bottom at 50% of its 1929 level. Unemployment soared, in the United States it peaked at 24.9% in 1933. Real economic output (real GDP) fell by 29% from 1929 to 1933 and the US stock market lost 89.5% of its value. Another unusual aspect of the Great Depression was deflation. Prices fell 25%, 30%, 30%, and 40% in the UK, Germany, the US, and France respectively from 1929 to 1933. In response to this tragedy, when President Roosevelt took office in 1933, he feverishly created program after program, known as the â€Å"New Deal.† These programs were created to give relief, create jobs, and stimulate economic recovery for the United States. In Germany the economy was especially vulnerable since it was built out of foreign capital, mostly loans from America and was very dependent on foreign trade. When those loans suddenly came due and when the world market for German exports dried up, the well-oiled German industrial machine quickly ground to a halt. As production levels fell, German workers were laid off. Along with this, banks failed throughout Germany. Savings accounts, the result of years of hard work, were instantly wiped out. Inflation soon followed making it hard for families to purchase expensive necessities with devalued money. Overnight, the middle class standard of living so many German families enjoyed was ruined by events outside of Germany, beyond their control.
